La Porte City Public Library is governed by a city appointed Board of Trustees consisting of six members. Trustees serve six-year (no limits) terms without compensation. Trustees bear fiduciary responsibility to taxpayers of La Porte City and Black Hawk County. The Library Director, hired by the Board of Trustees, manages day-to-day operations, procedures, enforcement of policies, and expenditures of the Library.

The Board adopts its own Bylaws and observes both the City of La Porte City Code of Ordinance and Iowa Code 392.5 (see below). 

The primary duties of the Board of Trustees are to establish policies, ensure patrons receive consistent service, represent the community when making decisions, and review expenditures, which are guided by the Mission & Vision of the Library.

All comments and correspondences are reviewed by the Board during the meeting.
