THE NOURISHED READER PROJECT

The Nourished Reader Project is the library's commitment to fueling young minds and bodies all summer long. From June through August, we provide free, nutritious meals to kids ages 0-17. Kids can drop into the library during all hours of operation to request a meal or just a snack.

Initially started in 2020 in partnership with the La Porte City Police Department, the program connected kids to stories outdoors. At these lunches with the library, kids engaged with community readers while enjoying a free meal during a time when access to food was extremely difficult.

Today, the program has expanded to provide lunches during the entire summer. With 60% of the community eligible for free or reduced lunches, this program bridges the gap between school years.

Fully funded by community donations from local businesses, individual stakeholders, and nonprofit organizations, the program may expand again to provide snacks to everyone of all ages year-round.

PICNICS IN THE PARK

Originally called Lunch with the Library, Picnics in the Park is held in City Park on the corner of 4th Street and Maple Street in downtown La Porte City. The program offers free lunches to kids, provided by the La Porte City Police Department. Parents and grandparents are welcome to stay for the story and craft but are asked to bring their own chairs or blankets.

While there is no age limit, meals are for kids only, and the stories are geared toward kids aged 3-7. No registration is required, but lunches are served right at 11am. For more details, visit our calendar on this website or call 319-342-3025.
