BOARD OF TRUSTEES
La Porte City Public Library is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of six members from the City of La Porte City and rural Black Hawk County. Trustees serve six-year terms (no limit) without compensation. Trustees bear fiduciary and policy responsibility to taxpayers of La Porte City and Black Hawk County. The library director, hired by the board, manages day-to-day operations, procedures, enforcement of policies, and expenditures of the library.
The board abides by its own bylaws and observes both the City of La Porte City Code of Ordinances 590, Chapter 22 and Iowa Code 392.5 (see below).
The primary duties of the board are to hire a library director, establish policies, approve the annual budget request to City Council, approve monthly expenditures, advocate for the library in the community, attend monthly public meetings, and complete at least five hours of library-related training. The board and staff are guided by the Mission & Vision of the library.
Meeting dates are listed below. All meetings are open to the public, and public comments are welcome. Members of the public and members of the board may also attend the meeting virtually via Zoom, which is linked to the Calendar of Events and linked to the agenda. Members of the public can also submit a comment or general correspondence using this form. All comments and correspondences are reviewed by the board during the meeting.
Whenever the board holds quorum (at least four members present), all discussion and business is subject to open meeting and open records laws per Chapters 21 and 22 of Iowa State Code. Agendas and meeting minutes can be accessed using the link below.

TRUSTEE VACANCIES
The Board of Trustees is seeking candidates to fill two seats that begin July 1, 2026. Please submit an application for the advisory position and an optional letter of interest. Applications are available in the library or can be printed by following this link to the City of La Porte City.
Should the library receive multiple applications, the board will conduct interviews before June 15. Final candidate recommendations will be appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council. Please direct all questions to the library director at director@lpcpubliclibrary.org.
