La Porte City Public Library is governed by a city appointed Board of Trustees consisting of six members. Trustees serve six-year (no limits) terms without compensation. Trustees bear fiduciary responsibility to taxpayers of La Porte City and Black Hawk County. The Library Director, hired by the Board of Trustees, manages day-to-day operations and expenditures of the library.
The Board adopted its own Bylaws and observes both the City of La Porte City Code of Ordinance and Iowa Code 392.5 (see below).
The primary duties of the Board of Trustees are to establish policies, ensure patrons receive consistent service, and review expenditures, which are guided by the Mission & Vision of the Library.
The Board of Trustees meets regularly on the second Monday of the month, starting at 5:30pm. Meetings are open to the public.

The Board of Trustees is currently seeking candidates to fill a vacancy beginning July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026, with the possibility of renewal for a six-year term. For this position, candidates must be legal citizens of the State of Iowa, be at least eighteen years of age, and reside within the city limits of La Porte City.
