Hawkins Memorial Library provides access to information, promotes literacy, and enriches lives to build a better community.
Everyone is welcome at Hawkins Memorial Library. We therefore commit to and value diversity—differences of all sorts, both visible and invisible; equity—providing every person with what they need to access and benefit from our resources; and inclusion—seeking out, engaging, and involving everyone. We commit to integrating DEI into all aspects of what we do; leveraging DEI to provide excellent service to our patrons, community, and each other; and fostering a sense of belonging in all. We're glad you are here!
Read. Learn. Inspire.
The Library seeks to become a valued and innovative community resource to empower residents to become life-long learners, to create ideas, and to build a community of achievers. Our sincere hope is community members become inspired from what they learn through reading!
As the Library Director and the Library Board of Trustees look to the future, the Edge evaluation, surveys, and Space Needs Assessments were utilized to help formulate the library's long-range goals. The Edge evaluation was completed fall 2018, a survey was taken by the City of La Porte City by Fusion Forward Design & Marketing (summer 2019), a survey by the La Porte City Economic Development Committee (2021), a space needs assessment conducted by Library Planner George Lawson (2014), and an in-house assessment (2023). The information gleaned from the community is important to the process of developing goals that will help guide the library services provided to the residents of La Porte City and the surrounding area.
GOAL 1: Improve community awareness of services available from the library.
GOAL 2: Provide physical space that meets the needs of patrons and the community.
GOAL 3: Promote lifelong learning.
GOAL 4: Increase digital literacy.
