Featured in windows of businesses and community venues throughout downtown La Porte City, the Library presents a new picture book as a StoryWalk®. Each month, a new story is chopped and placed into the windows of various businesses (depends on the length of the story!).
Start at the Hawkins Memorial Library to discover where you should go next to complete the story. New stories are posted around the first of every month.
The seven Black Hawk County public libraries have come together to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to our community in partnership with the Cedar Falls Community Foundation (CFCF). Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, quality books to children from birth until age five.

The Library hosts a thirty-minute storytime and craft, song, or activity in the youth department. Suitable for kids from two to five, children and caregivers are invited into the Library on Monday mornings at 10:00am for this fun, interactive program.
Of course, anyone is welcome to listen to the stories, sing along, and craft along with the kids! More details are in the All Events Calendar.
Partnering with the La Porte City Police Department, the Library is thrilled to present Lunch with the Library in City Park in the heart of La Porte City. This program runs concurrently with the Summer Reading Program by offering a simple lunch to youth while community and outreach organizations read themed stories. The program has been a massive success with hundreds of participants through the summer.
Look for this program to resume in June 2025 through August 2025 every Wednesday. If you're interested in co-hosting, please reach out to us!
